My love of running: becoming a marathon runner in 2018

Owning my own business, being a mum of two, wife to a very tolerant husband and a Mediator who helps many parents or former partners resolve their conflict means I need to do something for me to keep me sane. My running is ‘this’ something for me.

I ran the Leeds half marathon in 2010.  I did train but clearly not enough because I ended the race with an injury. It was a long time till I enjoyed running again. Next half marathon was the Great North Run in 2017.

The Yorkshire 10 mile was the closest I got to run a marathon last year. I say the closest because if you are familiar with this race you can run 10 or 26.2 miles. I know I am not a particularly fast runner but I like the challenge and headspace running creates. My son is never going to see me finish first which when he says comments like ‘mum you need to do it faster – we have been waiting for ages!’ I laugh – it is about completing a race and beating my last time for me.

When I signed up to the Yorkshire marathon my excitement grew but I am under no illustrate I need to train properly to finish 26.2 miles so 2018 is the year I am going to become a marathon runner. I  received a promotional email based on my time of the half to say ‘we estimate you could run a marathon in 4 hours 30 minutes. I don’t know about this time but I am going to give it try……

Liverpool Rock and Roll Marathon

October is too long to wait so before the Yorkshire marathon I signed up for Liverpool. My first attempt at running a Marathon will be in Liverpool on the 20th May 2018. I have my ASICs app on my phone which sets durations and pace of runs to prepare me for the marathon. First night in the snow and ice were not particularly enjoyable. Finding time to fit the runs in around family life and work is going to be a challenge but I find I feel better for it and it keeps my mind clear to be able to do all the work I need to do.  The treadmill also helps me keep up with my training.
