Children have no control over a decision made by their parents to separate. Understandably this is hard as they love both parents and their world is changing. They may see their parents hurting and do not want to upset them more. They may feel they have lost one parent and do not want to lose the other.
Who can they talk to?
Children may seek help from teachers or other family members, as we appreciate that speaking directly to a parent can be hard. Sometimes speaking to someone outside of the family can help a child unburden their worries, thoughts and feelings.
If the children you care for seem different or you fear they may be struggling, we can help.
Consulting children and giving them a voice is an important part of our work at Allison Family Mediation Services. When we consult with children they will be two professionals working with your family. One mediator is for the parents and the child consultant for the child or young person. The child consultant becomes an advocate for the child giving them a voice. Please read below to find out a bit about our Child Consultants.

Child consultation is NOT about expecting children to choose between their parents or asking children to make decisions. Children are reassured their parents will make decisions after their views, ideas and worries have been shared.
